Aflatoxin Leads To Three More Dog Food Recalls

Petrus, Advanced Animal Nutrition, Arrow Brand Dog Food Recalls

UPDATE (2/9/12): We originally posted this recall on December 29, 2011. The FDA has updated the lot numbers affected by the Advanced Animal Nutrition brand recall. The lot numbers affected now include lots 4K1004 through 4K1322. The formulas affected have not changed. For more details on the recall, continue reading.

Three more brands are joining Iams and Cargill in issuing dog food recalls due to unacceptable aflatoxin levels. All three brands have issued the recalls voluntarily and the FDA has released details on each recall.

Aflatoxin is a natural by-product of mold in corn, a common filler in dog food. Symptoms of aflatoxin poisoning include lethargy, yellow tint to eyes and gums, vomiting and diarrhea. If you have one of the affected foods and your dog shows any of these symptoms, call your veterinarian immediately. So far, none of the foods involved have led to illness, but the potential is too great to ignore.

Foods added to the recall are:

Petrus Feed

Petrus food is manufacturered at the same location as the recalled Cargill foods with high aflatoxin levels. The recall applies to one variety, the 21% Dog Food in 40-pound bags. Originally, the recall affected bags with date codes/lot numbers 4K1011 through 4K1307. They have added lot numbers 4K1308 through 4K1335 as well. The affected food was distributed in Alexandria, Louisiana.

If you have this food, return it to the place of purchase for a full refund, opened or unopened. If you have any questions, contact Petrus directly at 318-443-2259.
