Nationally-Distributed Dog Treats Recalled

A nationally-distributed brand of dog treats has been recalled.


Boots and Barkley brand bully sticks, distributed nationwide by Target stores, tested positive for salmonella contamination. They have recalled all 5-inch Boots and Barkley American Beef Bully Sticks in 6-count packages.

How To Tell If Your Package Is Affected


Packages marked with bar code 647263899189 are part of the recall.

Not all packages tested positive for salmonella. Packages with the following lot codes tested positive for salmonella:
 

   •  BESTBY20APR2014DEN

   •  BESTBY01JUN2014DEN

   •  BESTBY23JUN2014DEN

   •  BESTBY23SEP2014DEN

As a precaution, the manufacturer is recalling all lot numbers of the Boots and Barkley bully sticks.

What To Watch For


Anyone who has come into contact with the salmonella virus is at risk of contracting the illness.

 

Symptoms of salmonella in humans include: Symptoms of salmonella in dogs include:
   • Nausea    • Lethargy
   • Vomiting    • Vomiting
   • Diarrhea    • Diarrhea
   • Bloody diarrhea    • Bloody diarrhea
   • Stomach cramping    • Loss of appetite
   • Fever    • Fever

 

So far, no illness has been reported in dogs or humans in connection to this contamination.

What To Do If You Have Recalled Bully Sticks

 

Do not give your dog any of the recalled bully sticks. Instead, you may return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Consumers with questions can call the manufacturer, Kasel Associated Industries, at 1-800-218-4417.

What Happens Now

 

Kasel Associated Industries has stopped all production of the bully sticks. They are working with the Food and Drug Administration to determine the source of the salmonella contamination. At this time, no other products manufactured by Kasel are part of the recall.
