20 Good Dog Names

good dog names

Good dog names have to fill a few requirements:  they should be short and distinct, easy for a puppy to learn and recognize, sound good to the family and fit the dog.  It's a name you'll be saying many times a day for a long time, so it needs to be one you really like.

Some names fit those requirements better than others.  Below is a list of the top 20 dog names in Maricopa County, Arizona, along with their meaning and what breeds they're most commonly used for.  How many of these have you met?

Name Meaning Common Breeds
Buddy Friend Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds
Max The Greatest Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers

Charlie Free man Labrador Retrievers, Shih Tzus, Golden Retrievers
Angel Messenger of God Labrador Retrievers, Chihuahuas, Golden Retrievers
Harley From the hare's wood Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers

Some of the names make perfect sense - Chow Chows make their only appearance on the list for "Bear," and Golden Retrievers get named for their color ("Ginger").  And is it any surprise that the most popular name for man's best friend is "Buddy"?  As for "Roxy"... I think Boxers get the name that means Dawn because that's when they wake you up to play.
